DISHA ’17, Helping Hands Organisations’ (H2O) state-wide debating session to inculcate socio-civic awareness among youth, was conducted this time over at Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology (RSET). With over 100 participants and 30 volunteers, this half day long programme was hosted by H2O in association with Rotary and RSET, with the support of Bytekat Technologies.
The topic for the event was to consider if Waste Management, Ecology and Environment Conservation was being done efficiently in Ernakulam. Moderated by George Pulickan, socio-political satirist and further panelled by Dr A C Manoj, harbinger of the ‘Green Protocol Movement’ and Siju Thomas, district coordinator of Suchitwa Mission, Ernakulam, saw some informed and focused points, for and against the topic. The issue was also taken forward to class, caste and gender stigmas and how the concern of waste management in itself, was an outcome of the aforementioned social structures. By the end, H2O was able to garner massive support from the participants and had a number of them, along with others, wanting to be volunteers for H2O Ernakulam wing, going forward. An all-in-all successful event, received in good spirit by panellists, participants, associating members and volunteers, the first DISHA of the year, brought in hope for a better and a more aware citizenship for tomorrow.
